Drafting Stool

The drafting stool is a popular form of office chair, with many that boast adjustable height and ergonomic features in leather, metal and more.

There are a variety of different chairs that can be used in the home and office environment. One of the more common types is a drafting stool and this is typically used when a little extra height is needed in a seat. It is primarily an office chair and was originally designed for use at a drawing table. However it is a versatile style and can just as easily be used in the home for a number of purposes.

A drafting stool can come in a couple of different varieties. The most common is in the style of a high chair and has a padded seat and small backrest for supporting the back. It typically has a pneumatic seat allowing the height of the chair to be adjusted to suit the user and the style of work surface they are using. The chair has a central pedestal which supports the seat and allows it to swivel around. As the seat is higher most also have a circular bar foot rest on which you can place your feet for comfort and most are typically set on castor wheels for easy mobility. As an alternative to this, drafting stools can also be produced that look more like high stools without the backrest. However this tends to be less commonly available. These typically still have adjustable and swivel padded seats which are mostly round in shape, although some are produced with a saddle seat.

Although they are comfortable, drafting stools are primarily working seats which were originally designed for use at a drawing board. Although drawing boards are less common these days as a result of computers being used for drawing work, drafting stools can still be widely found in many offices. They can also be useful in the home and can be used in garages, workshops and kitchens. They are a good style for sitting at countertops and work benches as opposed to standing. This can be more comfortable when working for longer periods of time.

There are a number of manufacturers that produce the drafting stool style of chair with some of these including Office Star, Safco and Global. They are available for purchase at a few outlets with office equipment suppliers being some of the best places to look. Retailers such as Office Depot and Staples have a selection on offer and there are also a number of internet office equipment retailers that stock drafting stools for sale. Some of these include Biz Chair, Everything Office Furniture and Office Chairs Unlimited.

In terms of cost the most affordable style of drafting stool tends to be the stool type which does not have a backrest. These can be found for sale for less than $100. Office chairs unlimited, for example, have an Office Star drafting stool in this style available for $90 which has a chrome finish pedestal and a swivel, foam padded seat with a vinyl finish. If your preference is for drafting stools in the seat style these are usually more expensive with prices ranging up to around $300. Staples have a Safco Precision Extended Height Swivel Drafting Stool available for $260. This has a number of excellent features such as a pneumatic seat for height adjustment as well as manually adjustable back height and seat depth. It also has an adjustable foot rest meaning it can be set up well for anyone who uses it.

A drafting stool can be an excellent choice for sitting at a higher work surface. It can be used in the home or office and it provides a more comfortable alternative to standing when working. This can make it a good choice of chair.
